SPRINGFIELD - State Senators Jacqueline Y. Collins (D-Chicago 16th) and Emil Jones, III (D-Chicago 14th) honored the players of the Jackie Robinson West Little League baseball team yesterday, joining with local business owners and other community leaders to present them with reproductions of a baseball-themed painting by Annie Lee, a noted African-American artist with Chicago ties who passed away late last year.

"Playing the game they love in the national spotlight, these young men showcased not only their athletic abilities, but their sportsmanship, class and grace under pressure," Collins said. "I'm proud to see a community come together to honor our youth for their accomplishments."

"Far too often, young black men in our community are negatively labeled and don't receive any sort admiration for their achievements," Jones said. "It's an honor and privilege to recognize these young men not only for their athletic ability, but also their ability to unite a city. Our city was blessed to witness a historical event that will never be forgotten."

Collins and State Representative Monique Davis (D-Chicago 27th) have introduced resolutions calling on Little League International to rescind its decision to strip Jackie Robinson West of the national title it earned last year. Collins, Jones and others have stood with the players of JRW, who have inspired young people, particularly youth of color, throughout the United States and continue to represent Chicago with pride and dignity.

Restoring Justice

A Film Screening and Community Discussion Produced and Hosted by The School Project and Free Spirit Media

Thursday, March 5, 2015
North Lawndale College Prep
- Collins Campus
1313 S. Sacramento Avenue
Chicago, IL 60623
In The School Project's third segment, Restoring Justice, young documentary filmmakers from Free Spirit Media explore the impacts of discipline policies on students, school communities, and society.

Historically, excessively punitive policies have served to push allegedly disruptive students out of class and school and have fueled the school to prison pipeline (a term that illustrates the severity of the issue).

The film that this event centers around examines the movement toward more youth-centered, restorative justice practices, which began as a grass-roots effort and have subsequently been adopted to district leadership.

Has Made His Transition
(1914 - 2015)
101 Year Old Economic
Genius Passes Away
The Funeral will be held Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Cathedral Baptist Church 4821 S. Wabash Ave. Chicago, Illinois. Pre-Past 9:30am / Funeral 11:00am

The great Dr. Webb "Mr. Buy Black" Evans, founder of the United American Progress Association made his transition Feb. 23rd, at the age of 101 years old at 5:00pm at Mercy Hospital, in Chicago, Illinois, according to Min. Rahim "Sax Preacher" Aton.

He was most known as "Mr. Buy Black" due to his daily efforts getting people to "Buy Black" as a method to get Blacks off the economic bottom. He states that "anybody can come to this country and within a short time they are doing better than Black African Americans."

UAPA continues to work 365 days per year getting people to spend their money with the business people who live in the Black community.

Responding to those that say they don't hear other races telling their people to shop with their race, he said "they don't have to be told because they are already doing it without being told.

In November 2012 Dr. Webb Evans appointed Minister Rahim Chesed Aton, Founder of the Temple of Mercy Association as the new President of the UAPA who is currently working on a food co-operative supermarket.

(Dr. Webb Evans is a long-time supporter of The Black Star Project.)
