taking advantage of the blind!

Please read the below Chicago Tribune article and pass to OTHERS in the community.

Cedar Lake officials to offer Dolores Pittman a 'life estate'

Officials in the small Indiana town of Cedar Lake are taking action to make sure a blind woman can stay in the house she lost in a property dispute with an investor who bought her home of 55 years for $43 at a tax sale.
The Town Council this week voted unanimously to pursue buying the land from Clayton Pullins, a resident of neighboring Porter County, Ind., who purchased the land at a county tax auction in 2009 and last year moved to evict 67-year-old Dolores Pittman from the house she had lived in since she was 12.
The town will use municipal condemnation powers to buy the land — which is surrounded by property that includes the town's government complex and a park — if Pullins refuses the town's initial offer, council President Randell Niemeyer said Thursday.
State law would force Pullins to sell the house for a fair market price, determined by third-party appraisals, Niemeyer said. When the sale closes, Cedar Lake officials will offer Pittman a "life estate," a legal arrangement that would allow her to stay in the house for the rest of her days. Afterward the land would become part of the surrounding park, Niemeyer said.
"Mrs. Pittman has lived there a long time, and this is an arrangement that, to me, serves the public interest, and a human interest," Niemeyer said. "She'll be able to stay there for the rest of her life."
Pullins' attorney did not respond to requests for comment from the Tribune.
Pittman said she was cautiously optimistic after spending a year fighting in court to keep her house.Thursday, she said she was still packing her belongings after already moving some of her things to a rented house about 2 miles away.
"I'll have to see how things work out. All of this seems like it's been going on for so long," Pittman said as she sat in her tiny, near-empty living room, surrounded by a half-dozen cats. "Who knows how long this will take."
Pittman said she did hope to return to the house and stay.
"That's all I ever wanted in all this. To stay here the rest of my life, or until I had to go to a nursing home," she said, tearing up.
Pittman's family moved into the house in 1958, when Cedar Lake's namesake body of water was surrounded by camps owned by church groups. The Pittmans were members of a church that owned land on the lakefront and leased lots to congregation members who wanted to build cottage-type homes on them.
The Pittmans rented the house from another congregation member and eventually purchased the small, two-bedroom house. In the 1970s, the church sold all of its property to the town but left the parcel under the Pittmans' house out of the transaction, though no transfer to the Pittmans was ever recorded. The Pittmans had paid $10 per year to lease the land, first to the church and then to the town.
Starting in 2006, changes to Indiana tax law meant the land — which still was deeded to the church officially — started to get tax bills. Those bills apparently went to the church and were ignored, and eventually the land was put up for tax sale. Pittman didn't learn the property had been sold, she said, until she received an eviction notice from Pullins.
Pittman, who hasn't worked since she lost her sight to a degenerative disease about 30 years ago, eventually gave up her court fight to keep the land. She had planned to pay for rent and utilities at her new home with donated money that has poured in as her predicament received national attention. Now she might use the money for some much-needed renovations at the house before she moves back.
The town likely will end up paying far more than the $43 Pullins paid for the house, which is about 200 yards from the lakefront, Niemeyer said.
"I think that's a fair assumption," he said. "Real estate around here is a little more expensive than that. … It would have been a lot better if we could have got it at the tax sale."

China Open for Business for African Americans

Real Times Media's CEO reports: China is open for business

Hiram.jpg.jpg
For many Americans, China, officially the People’s Republic of China, represents an enigmatic country that is viewed in a multiplicity of ways. On one hand, some Americans equate China with the deadly 1989 pro-democratic protests involving thousands of students in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square which ultimately resulted in the death of hundreds of innocent Chinese civilians
But other Americans recognize China’s quantum leap in human rights, as well as its political and economic evolution over the past few decades that has transformed the country into the world’s most populous nation (more than 1.35 billion people), the world’s fastest growing major economy, the globe’s largest exporter and importer of goods, and host of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.
For Hiram E. Jackson, CEO of Detroit-based Real Times Media, China represented a country of mystique that offered more complex questions than answers about its government, people, culture, education system and religious beliefs. Further intrigued by the growing world status of China, Jackson embarked on a media, business and cultural fact-finding trip to the East Asia country several months ago to experience the People’s Republic of China up close and personal.
“I have always been interested in learning more about China’s long history, people and culture,” said Jackson, whose company publishes the Michigan Chronicle, Chicago Defender, Pittsburgh Courier and Atlanta Daily World, as well as annual Who’s Who publications that salute African-American achievements in 25 U.S. markets. “Therefore, I was excited by the opportunity to travel to China on a business and cultural mission.”
Jackson was one of several Black media professionals to make the trip. He was chosen because of his executive acumen in overseeing the massive reach of his company’s print and electronic media platforms to African-Americans throughout the United States.
Other members of the delegation traveling with Jackson, under the banner of the African-American Media Leadership Visit to China, included Cloves C. Campbell, Jr., delegation leader and chairman of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA); Warren Ballentine III, former host of “The Warren Ballentine Show,” a nationally syndicated radio program; George E. Curry, editor-in-chief, National Newspaper Publishers Association News Service; Kierna Mayo, editorial director, Ebony Magazine (digital); and Elizabeth Ragland, chief photographer, George Curry Media, LLC.
The China trip was organized and coordinated by Julia A. Wilson through her Washington, DC-based company, Wilson Global Communications. Wilson, an international social entrepreneur who also made the trip, served as the liaison between the China travelers and sponsor and host, China-United States Exchange Foundation (CUSEF), a China-based organization dedicated to strengthening and improving relationships between China and the United States. Tung Chee Hwa is CUSEF’s founding chairman.
The other sponsor and host was the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs (CPIFA), a Chinese organization founded 64 years ago by the late Premier Zhou Enlai. The organization was created to study world issues and facilitate exchanges with statesmen, scholars and other noted individuals representing various countries in order to better understand each other and form friendships. Yang Wenchang serves as the organization’s president.
After several months of planning, the media delegation visited three cities in China: Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai.
Beijing (four days)
Following a long flight from Chicago, Jackson and the delegation landed in Beijing, which is located in the northeast sector of China.
The city is home to approximately 19 million people. To put the 3,000-year-old city in perspective, its population is twice that of New York, America’s most populated city.
“Beijing was everything that I thought it was and nothing like I thought it would be,” said Jackson with a laugh. “You see a lot of Eestern images as soon as you land in Beijing. You see billboards for General Motors, the largest importer of cars to China. You also see fast-food establishments that are recognizable, such as McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Starbucks and KFC.”
The group’s first stop in Beijing was to the office of China Daily, the nation’s premier newspaper that is printed in English. The publication reaches more than 400,000 readers worldwide. The group was welcomed by the publication’s Mr. Qu, deputy chief editor, as well as Mr. Zhu, the newspaper’s former editor-in-chief.
Over the ensuing days in Beijing, the delegation was immersed with tours and visits in their quest to learn more about the city and China. The group visited the China International Cooperation Association of Small and Medium Enterprises and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
They also visited the Translation and Compilation Bureau, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission of the People’s Republic of China and the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs, where they had lunch and was welcomed by Director He and Director Wang.
No trip to Beijing would be complete without seeing and walking the Great Wall of China.
“The wall is incredible,” said Jackson. “It’s very difficult to describe just how massive the wall really is. It is thousands of miles long. It was built to keep China’s enemies out.”
The delegation’s stay in Beijing was highlighted during a luncheon hosted by Tung Chee Hwa, founding chairman of the China-United States Exchange Foundation and former chief executive of Hong Kong. He currently serves as vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
“I admire his wisdom to start the China-United States Exchange Foundation,” said Jackson. “He saw a tremendous need for the people of China and the people of the United States to build and maintain better relationships by having a better understanding of each other.”
The group later attended a dinner hosted by Alex Tzang, special advisor to the China-United States Exchange Foundation.
Xi’an (one day)
After a two-hour flight from Beijing, the delegation landed in Xi’an, a city of about nine million people. Located in central-northwest China, Xi’an is one of the original birthplaces of ancient Chinese civilization. The city is more than 3,000 years old.
“I was amazed by Xi’an’s historic heritage,” said Jackson. “I really enjoyed touring a community in Xia Yang County where we visited the homes of several Chinese people. We were well received by everyone.”
While Jackson saw many fascinating sites in this ancient city, he was most impressed by his visit to the Qin Shi Huang Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum where he saw the original underground sites of more than 7,000 life-sized pottery figures of the Terracotta army warriors and horses.
The figures were buried more than 2,100 years ago, but were unearthed in 1974 by peasants digging a well.
“I was told that the clay pottery figures of soldiers, archers and horses were made and buried to protect the tomb of China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, who at the age of only 13 ruled ancient China more than 2,100 years ago,” said Jackson.
“Each soldier is holding a weapon, ready to protect the tomb of Qin Shi Huang. It’s amazing how detailed the figures are after being made and buried more than 2,100 years ago.”
Shanghai (two days)
Flying from Xi’an to Shanghai, a two-hour flight, Jackson and the group continued their cultural excursion. Jackson was spellbound by Shanghai and learned that it is China’s largest city and has a strong economic, commercial and financial core.
“Shanghai is like New York City on steroids,” said Jackson. “It is very futuristic, very contemporary and very metropolitan, yet it has a great blend of cultures and features of modern and traditional China, with some Western influences. The city has some of the most breathtaking skyscrapers that I have ever seen.”
While in Shanghai the delegation visited the China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong, an elite education center for top Chinese leaders to gain needed skills to compete in the 21st Century.
The group also visited Huawei Showroom, a company that provides next-generation telecommunications network solutions. The day concluded with a cruise on the Huang Pu River, which gave the delegation an incredible view of Shanghai’s stunning downtown skyline.
Jackson has gained a new perspective of the People’s Republic of China. He was appreciative of Julia A. Wilson and her company, Wilson Global Communications, for the outstanding planning and coordination of the seven-day trip.
“We would have never accessed China on the high level that we did without Julia,” said Jackson. “She made sure that even before we traveled to China that we were educated in Chinese culture, protocol and etiquette.
“She is an incredible, intelligent and internationally astute African-American woman who has been doing these types of international tours and cultural exchange trips with China and other countries around the world for almost 20 years.
“The main reason for the trip to China was to help remove the stereotypes that many Americans have about the country,” said Wilson, who has led several other African-American groups on cultural, business, and educational trips to the People’s Republic of China.
“I believe the best way to remove the stereotypes of China is to go there and see it for yourself.”
For Jackson, Wilson’s advice paid off.
“My impression of China before the trip was that it was a closed, almost monolithic society with limited political freedom,” Jackson said.
“Although much of that does exist, I saw that China was developing and had more freedom than I thought. There’s music, there’s fashion, there’s nightlife in China!
“Before going to China, I wasn’t sure what the Chinese people thought about African-Americans,” he said. “However, I found that Chinese people have a great curiosity about the African-American community.
“While there is a great hunger for China to do business in the United States, the country views African-Americans as possible allies in doing future business in the People’s Republic of China.

Momma Hawk has literally gone to the dogs.

It all happened one day in June 2003 when absent from work due to a seizure when the doorbell rang.  Wondering who on earth was coming to see her Momma Hawk, struggled to get the door.  To her surprise, was a deputy from Chicago Public Schools who handed her a letter that stated she had been fired from Chicago Public School after 34 years of superior service.  With no further explanation, or understanding, Momma Hawk reviewed the document and retreated in disappointment.  While it has since been proven that there was no credence to the allegations, the lies and character slaying came from her trying to be a blessing to adults who had been rejected in the school system and was in need of a job.  Little did Momma Hawk know that these teachers would rise up and defame her character to get the job that she was in line for as the principal of Paderewski.  Her salary plummeted from 90,000 dollars a year to zero in less than 24 hours.  After years and years of feeding and clothing our westside children, educating them to success, d building their self esteem, this renowned educator found herself kicked to the curb and soon to be forgotten.
Watching the local news one morning, Momma Hawk became aware of pets that were homeless and hungry and in need of love.  She had decided that this would be her new venture in life and so she enlisted in the battle to save our animals.  It was then that Princess Zoray came into her life.  Princess is a miniature pinscher that had been badly abused by a family that had small children. Momma Hawk took her in to foster, and care for until an adopted family could be found.  Months passed and soon years and no one had claimed her.  After having a serious seizure, Momma Hawk's doctor told her that she needed to consider a service animal that would alert her before she went into a full blown seizure.  They showed her all kinds of beautiful animals that could assist, her but Momma Hawk did not want two dogs, and she was not ready to release Princess.  It was at this time that Princess was suggested for training, and became a faithful and loyal seizure alert animal.
Because of her small size and short hair, Princess showed signs of always being cold.  Due to her lack of income, Momma Hawk could not afford to buy the cute boutique clothing that is featured at local businesses, so she decided to reinvent the wheel.  Using a variety of fabric, she recycled items and created the most unusual outfits that became the conversation starters when she walked her up and down the street. Everyone wanted to know where those cute outfits came from and there began the birth of Princess Paws Couture.  Princess Paws Couture began with just cute outfits for small dogs that weigh under 15 pounds and has now grown to feature some furniture ideas, gourmet biscuits and meals, dogweavables (dog wigs)  nail care, bling bling ear rings, and other cute accessories.  What makes this business so endearing is that it is a personal pooch one stop shop.  Clients call for an appointment and time and attention is spent with that client until everything is decided. Within five days from the placement of that order, the client can happily come back and get their items gift wrapped in a beautiful pink and black packaging.

Due to the economy, there is a price for everyone.  Items can be as low s $20 .00 and can go as high as $1,000 dollars depending on what the client wants.  Momma Hawk specializes in working within the budget of her clients.  One client commented that she had only $30.00 and wanted a really cute - one of a kind coat for her shi zhu.  Momma Hawk showed her the fabrics that fit within her budget, allowed the client to select her trims and style and within five days Matsy was dressed to the nines in her designer coat.
Momma Hawk has found that the loyalty and love from rescue animals, exceed her expectation of what humans have to offer.  After her disappointing ordeal with Chicago Public Schools, Momma Hawk feels that animals are more loyal, more appreciative, more deserving and more worth her time and energy at this venture in her life.  She has no regrets about the hundreds of children that she has been able to empower, love and motivate to be a success in our society.  However, at this point in her life, she has fallen in love with dogs and her mission is to take them from rescue to royalty giving them the best lives ever and making sure that all that they need is provided for.
Momma Hawk's new goal in life is to host a Rescue to Royalty Talk Show for dogs and share with others how to give them the best of everything at an affordable price.

It doesn't matter if you're a dog lover or not, every living species needs love. Dog give unconditional love, and Dr. Momma Hawk specializes in making your pooch, the talk of the town, with one of kind designer dog gear!

Social Media Marketing

  • If you are looking for funding to build your business, this is the most important announcement of the year.
Did you know that you can raise money by having friends, family, colleagues, suppliers and vendors invest in your business, completely legally? There is new legislation that allows small and medium size companies to raise funds online. It's called a DPO (Direct Public Offering) as opposed to an IPO (Initial Public Offering). It allows companies to offer shares to family, colleagues, angel investors, suppliers, vendors and customers without the huge hassles of national registration, quarterly filings and reporting, meeting EDGAR and Sarbanes-Oxley requirements, NASDAQ or NYSE filings, etc. etc.

The CrowdFunding World Summit is a FREE virtual event, broadcast online from December 3rd through 16th. You can listen from anywhere.

This is the best way to become a CrowdFunding expert or learn how to raise money for your business with CrowdFunding, both here and abroad.

THE SEC HAS FINALLY RELEASED THE RULES ALLOWING DPOS, and this FREE online summit will show you exactly how to do this. There are over 65 expert speakers from a wide variety of government & private organizations, including:

Where America’s youth go online to avoid Mom and Dad

Guys,
Please read the below article and pass to OTHERS in the community.

Where America’s youth go online to avoid Mom and Dad

Ø Snapchat

If your kids aren’t on Facebookwhere are they? Try Snapchat. There’s no need to burn after reading: This app’s files self-destruct. The service is designed for savvy teenagers who don’t want to leave an Internet footprint. Released in September 2011, users can send “Snaps” — photos or videos — that last between 1 and 10 seconds, depending on the limit set by the sender. It already has 100 million users and 350 million snaps sent daily, according to a spokeswoman for the app. Twenty-six percent of 18- to 29-year-olds with cellphones use Snapchat, according to Pew Research Center, compared with 5% of 30- to 49-year-olds and 3% of 50- to 64-year-olds. Parents might want to monitor and check in on their kids’ social media activity from time to time, says Kelli Krafsky, coauthor of the book “Facebook and Your Marriage,” but “Snapchat is impossible to check.”

—By Quentin Fottrell

Ø Pheed

Launched in November 2012, this mobile app allows users to create and share videos, photos and voice tracks, plus make live broadcasts and share posts of 420 characters or less. Pheed reached 1 million users six weeks after launching and, last March, announced that it had 3 million users. It’s on track to double that by the end of the year, according to Steve Goldberg, a company spokesman. Pheed has never advertised or bought users, Goldberg says, “everything is organic and by word of mouth.” Around 84% of its users are ages 18 to 25. “When teenagers started using apps, Facebook was already a standard,” he says. “They never went and searched for their social network; it was sort of handed to them as the only option.”

Ø PicsArt

This app has lofty goals: Develop a “social art community,” and bring art to children around the world. Created by developer Artavazd Mehrabyan, the free photo-editing app and drawing tool PicsArt was released in November 2011. Since then, it’s exceeded 77 million downloads on mobile devices. Approximately 20% of users are between 13 and 17 years of age, and over 40% are between 18 and 24, according to a spokeswoman for the company. (She declined to comment on the number of active monthly users.) More teenagers, particularly girls, are moving toward niche sites where they can be more creative, says Jeanne Connon, chief marketing officer of FPgirl.com, a marketing firm that analyzes fashion, technology, trends and relationships among young girls.

Ø Tumblr

The microblogging site may still seems like it’s the Little Engine That Could, but now it has the might of Yahoo behind it. Yahoo bought the service in May for $1.1 billion. Started in 2007, it has racked up more than 144 million blogs and over 65 billion posts, according to the company’s website. Tumblr is also blending blogging and social media as users can post photos and videos. Over 60% of teenagers ages 13 to 18 use Tumblr, while 57% of 19- to 25-year-olds use the service, according to a 2013 survey by consumer research company Survata and blogger Garry Tan. Sites like Tumblr are aimed at teenagers, who don’t express a high level of concern about third-party access to their data; just 9% say they are “very” concerned about privacy, according to Pew.

Ø Vine

Twitter launched Vine — a video-sharing app — on iOS in January 2013 and on Android in June 2013. It has already attracted 40 million users, according to a Twitter spokeswoman. Like on the 140-character microblogging site Twitter, on Vine, less is more: Vine videos must be six seconds or less — not exactly in the same league as the director’s cut of “Blade Runner.” Still, visual sites like Instagram and Vine are the new ways teenagers are communicating and sharing, says Kristy Reynolds, professor of marketing at the University of Alabama. Exact figures on Vine’s age profile are difficult to pin down: As with Twitter, people can create a Vine account without providing their age. However, 26% of teenagers rate Twitter as an important social network.

SPEED NETWORKING MYTHS

Myth:     Speed Networking events are for young professionals only.
Reality:  Facebook was supposed to only be for college kids....right....SpeedNetworking events are showing up at major conferences and corporations such as the American Bar Association, Corporate Compliance, PepsiCo, World Presidents Organization and many others.  The demographics are consistent through all age brackets.

Myth:      Speed Networking events are for sales people only.
Reality:   Organizations of all types have been turning to speed networking events to engage in peer to peer networking, mentoring, cross selling, team building,  referral sources and many other networking formats.  Fortune 500 companies have also incorporated speed networking events internally to enhance team building and much more.

Myth:     You can't build a relationship in 5 minutes.
Reality:  We absolutely agree.  Speed Networking events shouldn't set the expectation you are going to meet the person that will do a deal, have the answer, give you a contact on the spot.  Theseevents are meant for initiating new relationship which will need to be fostered over the short and long term to ensure a positive outcome.
