Building safe an supportive neighborhoods through a community-based approach
E-News Bulletin October 2014
Greetings Shelomith,

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a month that brings awareness to the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women.  Because of this, many of us have witnessed family members and friends struggle with this disease, or have personally battled with it during our lifetime. However, as African Americans we still have a lot of work to do in educating ourselves about the causes, treatment and ongoing search for a cure.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer death among African American women. According to the American Cancer Society’s 2013-2014 Cancer Facts & Figures for African Americans report, African American women have the highest breast cancer mortality rate (deaths) in the United States, with 41 percent higher in African-American women than in white women. This pertinent information highlights the importance of addressing cancer as a health concern in the African American community.

To address some of these concerns, we will be hosting the State of the Cancer Union event "Empowering Communities: The Importance of Cancer Support & Long Term Survivorship"Saturday, November 8, 2014, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Chicago State University, Cordell Reed Student Union, 9501 S King Drive, Chicago, IL 60628. Please reserve your seat here.

Our panel will discuss:
  • Promoting a Sense of Community Among African American Cancer Patients
  • Building Capacity for Survivorship on Culturally Competent Interventions at Academic Medical Centers

The The State of the Cancer Union focuses on cancer research, policy, innovation, and advocacy for addressing health and healthcare disparities in minority and medically underserved communities. As we honor the lives of those we've lost to breast cancer, let us use this opportunity to educate ourselves on the preventative measures we can take to live a healthy cancer-free life.

Join us as we discuss cancer awareness in the African American community.

In Service,

Malik S. Nevels, J.D.

Members of Illinois Legislature Debate Merits Of Police Body Cameras

In its ruling, the state’s high court said the law “criminalizes a wide range of innocent conduct. …Read More
