Catch more. It’s that simple when it comes to identifying employees under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the workplace. But the real goal is safety in the workplace. Safety is a result of deterrence. Deterrence results from frequent random testing. Like ‘em or not, graphs and charts are powerful tools. The one to the right has a clear message: If you have 100 employees and 10 of them are drunk at any given time, you have a problem. So what do you do? You test them in the easiest, quickest way possible. If you use the DOT protocol of randomly testing 10% of the population for alcohol, then you will conduct ten tests over the course of a year. If your testing method is 100% accurate, you are likely to catch only one. Over two years, you’ll catch — you got it — two. To catch 10, it will take 10 years, and it’s possible that some of those 10 will be duplicates. In the meantime, those who drink may be operating machinery, operating forklifts, or even driving their own cars to attend a chamber of commerce “after hours.” If they leave from your workplace, you could be liable for an accident. Forty-seven percent of all workplace accidents involve alcohol. Keeping it out of the workplace prevents injuries and workers comp claims, and, therefore, reduces premium increases. Besides, who wants to work next to someone who’s been drinking? BUT if you test everyone, every day .... Easy math. Or test 10% every day. That’s pretty good, too. Frequency is the key. If your employees believe that, on any given day, they may be tested, that alone is an effective deterrent.
