Just before the Creative Chicago Expo, Jean Ann Douglass and Dianne Debicella from Fractured Atlas will give a special presentation about different types of liability insurance for artists' needs as well as fiscal sponsorship and how it can benefit artists in their crowdfunding, grant writing and other fundraising efforts. With fiscal sponsorship, you can solicit tax-deductible donations and apply for grants without going through the onerous process of launching a 501(c)(3). The sponsored "project" might be a one-time collaboration or an independent artist or even an arts organization that does not have its own 501(c)(3) status.
Fractured Atlas is a national organization that supports folks at every level of the cultural ecosystem. Mostly that includes individual artists — performing, visual, literary, design, media, and everything in between — and arts organizations — from one-person outfits to the biggest of the big.
Wine and snacks will be served. Space is limited, so register today!
Jean An Douglass
Jean Ann Douglass - Program Director for Insurance
Since joining the Fractured Atlas team in 2011, Jean Ann Douglass has helped thousands of artists and organizations navigate their way to affordable property, casualty, and health insurance, and is striving to demystify the insurance process for the artistic community. Jean Ann has been an arts administrator at various companies in New York since 2007, and holds an MFA in Performance and Interactive Media Arts from Brooklyn College and a BFA in Dance and Theatre from Tulane University. When she's not fighting for your right to inexpensive insurance policies, she is creating performances and designing projections for art installations and rock bands.
Dianne Debicella
Dianne Debicella - Senior Program Director for Fiscal Sponsorship
Dianne Debicella helps over 3,200 sponsored artists and emerging organizations, representing all artistic disciplines, find funding and other resources to support their work. Since 2006, she has led the program to become one of the largest, most renowned art fiscal sponsorship programs in the country with an annual budget of $17 million. Dianne is the co-founder of Brooklyn Community Supported Art + Design (CSA+D) and serves on the steering committee of the National Network of Fiscal Sponsors. She received her B.F.A. from Massachusetts College of Art and her M.P.A. from Pratt Institute's Arts and Cultural Management program. Dianne previously worked as a Project Coordinator for a restoration painting studio and as a Manager of Site Development for Planet Aid.

This workshop is designed to equip artists with a basic knowledge of intellectual property law, including contracts, licensing agreements, fair use, work for hire and other useful tools. Artists will learn to put these skills to immediate use by applying them to different popular cases that have buzzed around the news in the past few years. Wonder how fair use comes into play in cases like Shepard Fairey and the Obama "Hope" poster lawsuit with Associated Press? Curious about when it's okay to sample and appropriate another artists work, like in the case of Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" and the pre-emptive lawsuit with the family of Marvin Gaye? Listen in as a group of IP experts discuss these cases and how artists can learn from them.
Food and drinks will be served. Space is limited, so register today!
