By 2020 The Barack Obama Presidential Library Should Be Home in Chicago

CHICAGO–Several elected officials, activist and historians joined Martin Nesbitt, chairman of The Barack Obama Foundation to officially announce today that the future of the Barack Obama Presidential Center, which will include the library, museum as well as office and activity space for the Foundation, will be located in Chicago on the south side.
The President and First Lady announced their decision via a pre-recorded video. “With the library and a foundation on the South Side of Chicago, not only will we be able to encourage and affect change locally, but what we can also do is to attract the world to Chicago,” said President Obama. “All the strains of my life came together and I really became a man when I moved to Chicago. That’s where I was able to apply that early idealism to try to work in communities in public service. That’s where I met my wife. That’s where my children were born.”
First Lady Michelle Obama said, “I’m thrilled to be able to put this resource in the heart of the neighborhood that means the world to me. Every value, every memory, every important relationship to me exists in Chicago. I consider myself a South Sider.”
But while the nail biting over which city the Obama’s will choose is over, Chicago residents are still wondering if the location will be Jackson Park just east of the University of Chicago (U of C) , or in Washington Park, just west of the University while others are calling for a west side location.
Over the last 15 months, the Foundation has evaluated more than a dozen potential sites through an RFP process and considered a number of key factors, such as transportation and accessibility, economic development opportunities, community interest and engagement and the potential for academic and programmatic collaboration.
It will take another approximately six to nine months to decide on the location and the Presidential Center may be ready for the public by 2020.
“The city of Chicago was instrumental in demonstrating to the President and First Lady the advantages of locating the future Obama Presidential Center in the city, and the University of Chicago brought to life the broad potential and vital energy of the South Side, said Nesbitt.
“The Obamas have so much more to do in the White House and beyond, and we are excited to create a platform for their future work. Our goal will be to establish a Center that will exist not merely as testament to the President and First Lady’s Legacy, but as a dynamic, vibrant forum for civic participation, education, action and progress. We are especially looking forward to engaging with the vibrant South Side community in the years to come,” he added.
“Washington Park has the requisite infrastructure including public transportation and the economic impact would be greater there because of the surrounding neighborhood,” said Congressman Bobby L. Rush.
Two of Chicago’s well respected historians expressed their joy over the decision.
“You keep your New York joy, I’m going to Illinois just as fast as I can, ” said Dr. Carol Adams, and South Side resident and cultural historian during the announcement referencing a Chicago artist.  “I cannot tell you how excited  we are to welcome President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama home to Chicago’s iconic black metropolis, a community overflowing with assets, yet also in need of the catalytic engine the Obama Library Center will surely bring.”

“It’s a dream come true in terms of the south side being a place that will be recognized all over the world because of the successes that the south side has produced–politically, economically, culturally; when we talk about jazz, blues, gospel; sports, the globetrotters.  South side, when you talk about all those things, this dramatizes the success of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. And to that extent the library makes it easier and simplifies that story,” said Timuel Black, historian, civil rights activist and author.

“This Library will enrich the culture of the south side; I think we spend a lot of time being demonized. There has been a lot of negative publicity on the south side, but there are good people here, hard working people,” said Chloe Gliseie who was featured in the announcement video. “So the library will bring a rich history to the youth here, but it will also shine a light on the people here who are doing some good.  I hope we (the community) uses it. I hope that there are many field trips there and parents are talking about it and that kids are going there everyday.”
Additionally, South Side community groups crafted a community benefits agreement. “If history has taught us anything, it’s that equity doesn’t just happen. Here we have a rare opportunity to narrow the gap of extreme health/wealth disparities suffered from ages of policies, and practices that hurt black communities. Now we need honest conversation and a rigorous shared process to design and build our best intentions. All of Chicago’s south side communities should benefit from the economic catalyst of the Library,” Anton Seals Jr. The group released a news release in response to the announcement.
