“Wealth Empowerment Camp” for Youth

Chicago, IL.  June 26, 2014. Chicago area youth have traded their hoop dreams and video games for a chance to expand their vision with real life financial skills. Dr. Deena Marie Carr—Economist, Author, Speaker and Television Host is helping to ‘Stop the Violence’ one child at a time by working with youth ages 10 to 12 years old. The financial expert believes ‘when you change your education—you change your economics’ and is conducting a 4-week summer camp to show Chicago youth cutting edge techniques to become economically viable influences. “We are not just going to deal with financial literacy, but also, what it take to be an economic force globally,” said Carr. “It is to really help them understand wealth—how to create it and how to sustain it,” she continued, “By the time they finish, they can teach their parents how to invest.”

The author of several books including, The Carr Guide to Personal Wealth, has dedicated her knowledge and wisdom to help ordinary people learn the language of finance by offering free classes well over a decade. The University of Chicago Booth School of Business graduate has developed a curriculum to equip children with easy and practical steps in their formative years. “When you think of the top billionaires—they got it from science and technology,” said Carr, who received the 2013 Business Leaders of Colors Award from Chicago United. The North Park Adjunct Professor will integrate practical experience with faith, humor and real life financial aids for tweens. “We can’t keep raising our children for last century—we must raise them for the next century. We are empowering our youth to bypass all the mistakes and really concentrate on building a new focus of how to understand and sustain wealth.”

Web Version  |  Update preferences  | Unsubscribe Like Tweet Forward First-time pot buyer loses job but then gets rehired Reading a recent post in “The Pot Blog” (which covers legal, political & social changes as they relate to legalized marijuana in Washington state), I was somewhat taken aback by the series of events that  occurred in Spokane when a gentleman openly displayed the four grams of marijuana he had legally purchased. That it was pot and that he paid for it were not so extraordinary; that he was the first person in Washington to buy the state-licensed weed wasn’t so remarkable either. That he did so in front of a camera? That’s what got the attention of the media and, not surprisingly, his employer. Here’s what happened: 1.      The man was shown on a news station happily holding his purchase in the air. 2.      Then viewers can see him smoking what looks to be his purchase. 3.      Next, a client of his employer (TrueBlue Labor Ready, a labor staffing company) complained to that employer (details on that complaint are spotty). 4.      Forty minutes after the man bought the pot he received a text from TrueBlue indicating that unless he took a urine drug test within 24 hours he’d lose his job. 5.      Then the man called his employer, explaining that he would fail the test.  TrueBlue’s response? He’d be fired. 6.      Meanwhile, on the same day, the man’s part-time employer, Kodiak Security, also chimed in regarding a urine drug test, which he took the following day. 7.      Then, apparently, a media storm erupted and the story got bigger and bigger. 8.      Ultimately, TrueBlue called him in and said he had not lost his job though “company policy prohibits being under the influence on the job.” So far, at least at this writing, there’s been no word about the other employer. So what does all this mean and how can we learn from it? First, this scenario underscores how uncharted the territory really is. You have an employee following the law, yet his employer must still pay attention to its clients’ concerns. Your company may not be in staffing, but your clients surely have expectations that your workers are safe, sober and responsible. What employer really wants this played out in the media? Ouch. Why did this happen? The article does not share all of the details, but, from what I can tell, there was either a poorly written policy in place, or the employer did not fully understand its own policy. Typically, an employer will require a drug test for only a handful of reasons: pre-employment, post-accident, random and for reasonable suspicion. One could easily make the assumption that seeing a photo of an employee displaying and smoking a bag of weed might fit the requirements of “reasonable suspicion.” I’m not an attorney, but most written policies I’ve seen describe “reasonable suspicion” similarly to the way the U. S. Department of Transportation does: “based upon specific, contemporaneous, articulable observations concerning the appearance, behavior, speech, or body odors of the employee. “ This means while at work. The question is whether they had the right to test this guy. In my view, that’s probably why they backed off. They did not have a defensible reason to test him. Still, when it comes to safety and a company’s reputation, preparation is key. If you’ve been thinking about instituting a drug and alcohol testing policy, it’s time to put that plan into action. If you have not been thinking about it, it’s time to consider it. And if you already have one, it would be wise to take a fresh look at your written policy. Don’t get caught off guard. The media loves stories like this, but most of us don’t want to be the headline. And you never, ever want to expose yourself to liability. And incidentally, you don’t have to wait until you have a full and bound employee handbook in order to introduce an alcohol and drug testing policy. But you do need to let your employees know in writing why it’s good for the company — and for your customers. Naturally, we’re happy to discuss how you can quickly put something into place. New York Film Academy Releases Black Inequality in Film Infographic

The New York Film Academy has released a new and comprehensive Black Hollywood infographic on the current state and history of African Americans in Hollywood.

"It is imperative that the next generation of young black filmmakers realize that their power is in their unique perspectives, unique skill sets, and unique stories. Standing out is a good thing in Hollywood," says Ride Along and Think Like a Man producer.

Following the monumental year that was 2013 for Black film and the recent Best Picture Oscar win for "12 Years a Slave," the Academy decided to take a closer look at the surge in critical and commercial success of Black film. As such, the Academy compiled a series of statistics and research studies to highlight both the modern challenges and advancements of Black filmmakers and actors while looking at one hundred years of Black film to place modern Black Hollywood in a greater historical context. The infographic highlights such figures as the profound disparity between the amount of speaking parts Black Characters receive compared to their White counterparts while also analyzing the significant global profitability of Black films that have substantially smaller budgets and appear on far less screens.

In addition to highlighting the abundant disparity African Americans encounter both on screen and behind the camera, the infographic also highlights the accomplishments of influential filmmakers and producers including Steve McQueen, Will Packer, and Gina Prince-Bythewood along with new voices such as Ryan Coogler and Lena Waithe. In assembling this information, the Academy hopes to help keep the topic of equality and black film in Hollywood at the forefront of the cultural discussion, as history shows that Hollywood has gone through such boom periods of Black film before, only to shy away from such films once the hype passes.
