Michelle Obama to Speak on Youth Violence in Chicago

It saddens me that the high school I graduated from is the center of attention as far as youth violence is concerned. First Lady Mechelle Obama is visiting her hometown again to speak out and find results.

When 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed at a Chicago playground just a few days after performing at President Obama’s inauguration in January, First Lady Michelle Obama flew to Chicago to attend Pendleton’s funeral. At President Obama’s State of the Union speech, Pendleton’s parents sat next to the first lady.
Now, Michelle Obama is heading back to her hometown to join Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the president’s former chief of staff, in urging the city’s business and philanthropic communities to raise $50 million for community-based programs to help at-risk young people.

She will speak at an April 10 lunch meeting called “Working Together to Address Youth Violence in Chicago,” which will be attended by members of several civic organizations, including the Commercial Club, the Economic Club, the Executives’ Club, and World Business Chicago, the White House announced yesterday.

The meeting is the result of an initiative led by two CEOs, Tom Wilson of Allstate and Jim Reynolds of Loop Capital, according to Emanuel’s office.

Wilson and Reynolds will head a coalition of business and community leaders, researchers and criminal justice professionals to identify, support and expand proven programs, monitor their effectiveness and encourage community engagement through donations and volunteer work, Emanuel’s office said.
“Chicago’s businesses are partnering with social service professionals and community groups to make our neighborhoods safer for innocent children,” said Wilson in a prepared statement. “The current level of violence has been decades in the making and is unacceptable.”

In his own statement, Reynolds said he had been born and raised on the South Side of Chicago and had witnessed how community violence hurt the ability of its children to thrive.
“We expect the business community to play an important and active role in answering the Mayor’s call to invest in programs that serve some of our most vulnerable children,” Reynolds said.

New Search Engine for Activists:

Freedom Archives Online

For Progressives & Activists there's "A New Way to Search", the Freedom Archives Online

The Freedom Archives is excited to announce our new search engine at search.freedomarchives.org
You can now digitally access audio, video and full-text written materials and browse through our many collections
that date from the late-60s to the mid-90s and chronicle progressive history and culture of liberation struggles
and movements. Along with the expanded ability to search the archives, we are excited to highlight 300 digitized
documents from the Committee to End the Marion Lockdown, a great supplement to our recently released book,
Out of Control – A Fifteen Year Battle Against Control Unit Prisons. One of the newly available resources is a video
from a 1987 event held by the Committee to End the Marion Lockdown in which they created a model control unit cell.
As the hunger strikers at Pelican Bay are gearing up to re-initiate their strike in July, it is as relevant and important
as ever to understand the conditions they face as well as the historical legacy of resistance and organizing against
inhumane treatment inside of America’s prisons.

The search engine is still a work in progress, and we are excited to increase its usability as well as the amount of
online content for all to access. Please contact us if you are interested in donating historical materials to our
collection, want to volunteer to further increase the impact of this important work or can contribute to our efforts
– your donations are fully tax deductible. You can donate here or contact us at info@freedomarchives.org.

Oprah has a body double?

 Oprah has a body double?
Yes she does, believe it or not!
Well, she might not be the type to perform thrilling stunts, but she still needs a stand-in every time she does a photo shoot.
On Tuesday, the legendary TV personality shared a behind-the-scenes video on Oprah.com from the April cover shoot for O, The Oprah Magazine, and she introduced us to a Hawaiian local named Shaka. Not only did the lucky lady get the chance to be Lady O's stand-in for the shoot, but she also got to spend some quality time with the superstar.
In true Oprah fashion, the star quickly bonded with Shaka over their matching outfits, but she made sure to joke that her ensemble was slightly more lavish than her counterpart's.
